Our untamed selves - Ian Malone

Posted on Nov 06, 2019

Painting

“Our Untamed “Selves” is the première, individual exhibition of the Irish Artist Ian Malone in Poland.

The exhibition "Our Untamed “Selves” refers to a series of paintings created after 2015, in which a critical story is developed about the problems of the 21st century. The zoological perception of people opens the door to observing their behaviour in the animal kingdom and subjecting them to critical analysis of traits that are bestial and barbaric in relation to themselves. The paintings most often depict apes, which in Christian iconography personified stupidity, vanity and avarice, as well as the deterioration of values, refer to situations that characterize modern society of the 21st century.

The image of apes to ridicule human stupidity was used by artists in the 16th and 17th centuries by Pieter Bruegel the Elder   or David Teniers (Younger).

The figures of apes in Ian Malone's paintings show a critical attitude to the idea of anthropocentrism, which puts men in the centre of the world as a privileged, intelligent, ethical species, and thus treating others including animals with due respect.      Meanwhile, in the work "Contemporary kitsch," the artist considers what determines that we treat animals once as the best family members, other times we bully them or use them to meet imaginary needs such as killing for sport or for obtaining jewellery material.
